To protect users and improve the quality of search results, Google is constantly refining its spam detection algorithms. Let’s explore how Google identifies spam content in the following article. 

1. How Google’s manual and automated spam detection algorithms improve search result quality

Google’s spam policies are designed to improve the quality of search results. Specifically, content must not violate Google Search’s general policies or spam policies to be eligible to appear in search results. Google detects violations through both automated systems and manual reviews. Websites that violate these policies may be ranked lower or removed from search results entirely. 

Users can report spam content to Google via the Report Spam page. In addition to developing automated algorithms, these user reports help Google address issues and improve its spam detection systems. 

2. Common behaviors identified as spam by Google’s algorithms

2.1. Cloaking to deceive users

Cloaking is the practice of showing users different content than what is presented to search engines. For example, a site might show a search engine content about travel destinations while showing users content about discount sales. If you use a paywall or content gating, Google does not consider this cloaking as long as the algorithm can access the full content behind the paywall.

Doorway pages are sites or pages created to rank for specific, similar search queries. These pages funnel users to intermediate pages that are not as useful as the final destination. Common types of doorway pages include: multiple homepages or site versions with slightly altered URLs to maximize reach for specific queries; or multiple domains/pages targeting a specific region that all redirect to the same site. 

2.3. Exploiting expired domains to host low-value content

This involves purchasing and using expired domains to manipulate Google Search rankings by hosting content that has little or no value to readers. An example would be a medical product site hosted on a domain previously used by a non-profit health organization.

Hacked content is content placed on a site without permission due to security vulnerabilities. This content is not only low-quality but also poses a risk of installing malicious software on users' devices. Common examples include injecting malicious code, adding pages with policy-violating content, or inserting hidden links or text. 

2.5. Inserting hidden text and links that are difficult for users to see 

Content inserted this way is intended solely to manipulate search engines, as it is difficult for users to see. Examples include using white text on a white background, hiding text behind images, using CSS to position text off-screen, or hiding links by attaching them to a single small character like a hyphen. 

2.6. Indiscriminate keyword stuffing 

This is the practice of loading a page with numerous keywords or numbers to achieve high rankings on Google Search. Often, these keywords are not presented naturally or in context. Examples include lists of phone numbers, mentioning numerous cities and regions to boost rankings, or repeating keywords in an unnatural, excessive manner. 

2.7. Link spam intended to manipulate rankings 

Any link intended to manipulate rankings in Google Search is considered link spam, including attempts to manipulate links to your site or links from your site. Link spam can result from excessive link exchanges, using automated services to generate links to your site, and more. 

2.8. Automated, machine-generated traffic 

Machine-generated traffic consumes resources and hinders Google's ability to support users. Behaviors considered as such include sending automated queries to Google or accessing Google Search automatically... 

2.9. Malware and harmful behavior toward users

Google's algorithm will check for any malware or unwanted software on the web that affects users. Malware refers to software or applications designed to harm mobile devices or computers, such as installing software without the user's consent. Unwanted software includes EXE files or mobile apps that exhibit deceptive behavior, negatively impacting the user experience. 

2.10. Misleading content on websites 

Some site owners intentionally create pages containing false information to deceive users. For example, a fake website might offer features like PDF merging or an online dictionary, but instead redirects users to a scam advertising page rather than the service promised.

2.11. Large-scale content abuse 

This behavior typically focuses on creating large amounts of unoriginal content that has little or no value. For instance, site owners might use AI to generate numerous pages or combine content from various different websites, none of which add value for the user. 

2.12 Scraped content with no value 

Some site owners build pages based on content scraped from other sources without providing any additional value to users; furthermore, this can also be considered a copyright violation. Your website may be demoted if it receives multiple valid removal requests under the law. Websites will be Google's algorithm negatively evaluated if they: copy and publish content identical to the original source, or only slightly modify content by replacing words with synonyms... 

2.13. Sneaky redirects

This is the act of sending users to a URL different from the one originally requested, with no reference value. However, if your site redirects a URL to a new address or merges multiple pages into one, it is not considered a sneaky redirect by Google. 

2.14. Site reputation abuse for third-party gain

Third-party pages exploit the reputation of a first-party site by publishing content with little or no involvement from the first party. These are often sponsored pages, advertisements, or partner content. Examples of this spam include an educational website hosting a page for third-party payday loan reviews, or a medical website hosting a page for a casino. 

2.15 Thin affiliate content

These are pages that link to products where the product descriptions and reviews are copied exactly from the original content, providing no additional value. Such pages are often created in bulk or share the same content template. 

2.16. User-generated spam content affecting the website

User-generated spam on websites is often added to private channels, and site owners are frequently unaware of its presence. Examples of user-generated spam include spam posts in forum discussions or spam-filled files uploaded to your platform. You can prevent and eliminate this behavior by implementing clear policies, using automated account creation blockers, and other measures on your site.
